Register NOW for America’s Boating Course!!!

Comprehensive basic boating safety course for Power, Sail and Paddle Boats, held 6 Monday evenings: Feb. 13, 20, 27, Mar. 5, 12 & 19 at Skagit Valley College in Friday Harbor, from 7:00-9:00 PM. Instruction is FREE. Materials (manual and Coastal Navigator electronic chart program) cost $45.00 and can be shared by a couple. Current Middle School, High School and College students = 50% discount on materials. Topics include: Choosing the Right Boat, Required Safety Equipment, Docking, Operator Responsibilities, State & Local Regulations, Navigation Rules, Navigation Aids, Lights and Sound Signals, Charts, Anchoring, Handling Boating Emergencies & Weather, Use of VHF Radio, Trailering, Knots and Plotting a course on both paper and electronic charts. Completion qualifies for the WA State Boater Education Card, required of all boaters under 55 years, Marine Insurance discounts up to 15% and opportunity to take advanced classes.

Educational Department - Member Courses

One of the main goals of the Friday Harbor Power Squadron is “Boating Safety Through Education” – we believe that an educated boater is a safer boater. In addition to our public education program, FHPS teaches a series of outstanding members-only courses that cover advanced seamanship, navigational techniques, boat handling, marine engine maintenance / electronics, and enhancement topics covering weather, cruise planning and sail.

Advanced Grade Courses

Five Advanced Grade courses are offered by FHPS. They are designed to be taken in sequence because each builds on skills taught in the previous course.

Seamanship covers basic deck seamanship, marlinspike (knots & lines), anchoring and rafting, basic boat care and maintenance, and nautical customs and etiquette.
Piloting is the first and most basic navigation course which covers chart reading, course plotting, and basic coastal / inland navigation including basic GPS usage. This course goes into more detail than the charting information covered in the public course.
Advanced Piloting covers more advanced coastal navigational techniques, navigation in tides and currents, and more advanced GPS usage.
Junior Navigation teaches the basics of offshore navigation, including basic celestial navigation using the sun and offshore course planning.
Navigation is the most advanced navigation course by FHPS, covering more advanced celestial navigation techniques, emergency navigation, and additional sight reduction techniques. (NOTE: To be offered Spring 2010)

Elective Courses

There are six elective courses offered by FHPS. Each covers a separate and independent topic and therefore may be taken in any order according to a member’s interest and time.

Engine Maintenance covers the operating principles and basic care and maintenance of outboard and inboard engines, including diesels.
Marine Electronics covers installation and maintenance of both boat electrical systems (AC and DC) and marine electronics (VHF radio, radar, GPS, etc.)
Cruise Planning covers topics of interest for someone planning a cruise – whether for just a weekend or for a year – including preparation and planning, anchoring, security, chartering, and cruising outside the US.
Weather covers weather forecasting and reading weather patterns on-board.
Sail covers everything from the basic elements of how a sailboat works to sail trim, rig tuning, and sailboat racing.
Instructor Development teaches effective communication skills for not only FHPS instructors but for everyone, covering various methods of presenting information to others, effective use of audiovisual aids including PowerPoint.
